Los Espíritus

Magic can be real en Colombia, you just need to know where to look. When exploring the nation’s 32 departments, one can find many complex and vibrant traditions of mythology and folktales that are uniquely Colombian. As a multicultural nation, the stories of Colombia have roots in many places around the world. In Colombia, one can trace the indigenous roots of storytelling through tales of powerful heroes and living forests. Africa lends Colombian storytellers its ancient gods and clever animals. These things mixed with the existing Spanish stories and language to create new narratives that helped people learn to love their home even more.

Loving your home is easy when fantastic things happen there. And fantastic things happen en cada rincon de Colombia. Flowers of every shape, size and color you can imagine bloom there year round. In low valleys ancient rivers rush with the same power and youthfulness that they had when they were first born. There are thousands of birds, and millions of bugs and billions of other things that all live together in perfect harmony. En Colombia the sun always finds its way back to the sky after summer storms, and the summer storms make sure that the corn always grows sweet. There are lessons around every corner and teachers on every porch, and so it is not too hard to believe that magic can be real en Colombia.

Now, many people may dismiss that magic as being nothing more than coincidence wrapped up in a phenomenon that can be explained by science, but mi abuelita would tell those many people not to be so quick to dismiss the fantastic. All the unexplainable yet spectacular things that make Colombia Colombia are part of what makes this land the perfect place to ask “why?”.

Why do so many orchids grow there? Why do the toches sing the way they do? Why do mountains sit still, and why do rivers flow so quickly? You can spend hundreds of days coming up with hundreds of questions about why things en Colombia happen the way they do. And depending on who you ask, you could wind up with hundreds of answers too, but Abuelita’s answer is always simple. It is the spirits that bring magic to our lives, and that magic is part of what made la Casa Vargas so special.

Estas son las historias de magia y milagros en nuestro hogar.
